Muncaster Castle near Ravenglass stands on Roman foundations and, despite the castle being haunted, the Pennington family have lived there since 1026! The castle is famous for it’s beautiful gardens which are spectacular in spring and early summer. It is also the headquarters of the World Owl Centre and you will find one of the world’s biggest collections of owls on site.
Eskdale has 5 pubs to quench your thirst and serve good quality home cooking. The Bower House Inn at the west side of Eskdale green is a 10 minute walk from the cottage and serves good quality food. The George lV at the other end of Eskdale Green is a 15 minute walk. The Woolpack Inn, Boot Inn, Brookhouse Inn are all convenient stop offs when out walking or a short journey by car.
A 7 mile glorious journey on “La’al Ratty” from Ravenglass through Miterdale following the river valley, as you leave Irton Road station you can see Rock How standing on the hillside looking over the valley, on through Eskdale Green station and then on to Dalegarth.
The Dalegarth to Ravenglass railway was built in 1875 to carry ore it’s ancient steam engines and period carriages now take tourists on this most scenic journey with interesting walks at every station you can stop off at each station to explore before making the return journey.
Eskdale Golf Course is an 18 hole parkland course par 69 and a length of 5494 yards. As well as testing even the most skilful player it has stunning views. The course is open from 1st April to 30th October and it is £25 per round. The club request that you book in advance by telephoning 01229 717680.
THE JAPANESE GARDEN, in Giggle Alley forest, was the jewel in James Rea's horticultural crown. Following decades of neglect the garden is now being caringly restored by local volunteers and Forest Enterprise. There are thickets of bamboo, a stunning display of Japanese maples and the heady scent of azaleas in the spring. The whole forest is open to the public, but the quickest way to see it is look over the back wall of the garden, it is 50 metres to the right!

• Sea Fishing from the beach for sea bass and cod. Good fish can be caught two hours before high tide up to two hours after, best at dusk or into the night.
• For Coarse Fishing Millom & District Angling Association’s two ponds at Broughton contain rudd and carp . Day tickets from the information centre at Broughton.
• Pike angers are well catered for by the larger Lakeland waters of Coniston, Windermere etc.. Fishing is free where there is public access to the bank.
• Fish for Salmon on the nearby River Irt or River Duddon. Contact Gosforth fishing club on 01946 725367 for details of fishing on the Irt and call in at Haverigg Post Office for a permit to fish on the Duddon
Set in the hamlet of Boot the mill is powered by water running off Scafell. The mill has historic working machinery and it is one of the oldest water driven corn mills in England
