Eskdale is one of the Lake Districts most beautiful valleys often described as the “hidden gem”. At the upper end of Eskdale is the Great Moss surrounded by some of the countries highest peaks including Scafell Pike, Esk Hause and Bowfell.

As the famous Hard Knott Pass road starts to descend into Eskdale it passes the Roman Fort (AD120) and runs through the vally with its two hamlets of Boot and Eskdale Green, where Rock How is situated.

The other two notable items running through the valley are the beautiful river Esk with it’s riverside walks and mountain bike tracks and the famous la’al Ratty narrow gauge steam trains that travel the 7 miles from Dalegarth Station high in the Eskdale Valley to the coast. La’al Ratty was built in 1875 to take ore from Dalegarth to Ravenglass it’s vintage steam trains now carry 120,000 passengers each year.

Eskdale offers a tremendous range of activity (and inactivity) for every age range and fitness levels. For the particularly energetic it has 5 pubs to quench your thirst and serve home cooking; Bower house Inn;
Woolpack Inn, Boot Inn,
Brookhouse Inn and the
George IV.
